Why didn’t Brault stay in the game?? Hurdle batted him for god sakes in the 15th with 2 outs and he had great stuff too innthr 4 innings he pitched. Plus Kyle Crick was available too after an off day and Vkint didn’t use him with the game on the line he used Holmes. This is a complete disgrace and this loss is definitely on Hurdle who needs to be fired. The things he has done she the way he continues to sabotage wins into losses and mismanages this team is completely and totally unacceptable.

Brilliant effort by Brault. Another disaster from Holmes. One interesting note from review of the box score:

Bell pinch hit 5th - K, 3 lob

Dickerson PH 8th - K

Moran PH 9th - K, 2 lob

SRod PH 11th- K 1 lob.

A collective golden sombrero from the pinch hitters.

I agree. If Brault was good to keep going; you give him the ball and tell him to save the win for himself. I just don’t understand why Holmes is on the roster and why Clint used him. He has no command. None of the pitches he threw were near where Diaz called for them. I mean he uncorked 2 of the wildest pitches I have ever seen. One was a fastball that was 10’ high straight to the backstop/netting. Another one that landed 10’ in front of home plate. Diaz was so upset with him that he quit giving signals and motioned for him to just throw it over the plate. You could tell he had lost whatever composure was left. Searage talked to him but it made no difference. 6 hours later and I still can’t get this loss out of my head. Sucks being a die hard Pirate fan this past week!

I nominate this as the single worst, most embarrassing, brutal, pathetic, idiotic, moronic and INEXCUSABLE loss of the season.

The Brewers score 4 runs in the 1st.

Then the Pirates hold them SCORELESS until the 15th inning ... and OF COURSE they allow 3 runs after scoring 2 themselves.

WORST LOSS OF THE SEASON ... and that's really saying something.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I stayed up to watch that? Now I feel like I'm hung over but even more than that, I'm furious with Hurdle for such mismanagement.

The Brewers having to send a pitcher to the plate with 2 on and 2 out in the 15th ... and CLAY HOLMES WALKING HIM ... well, that right there is THE MOST PIRATES THING EVER.

Single worst moment of the season.

In addition to Holmes' meltdown, it didn't help that Polanco should have had a very good chance to throw out Lyles from shallow RF as the pitcher tried to score the winning run from 2B. Polanco's throw was about 15 feet to the 1B side of the plate.

And not defending Holmes here because he's been putrid in 5 of 7 appearances, but Greg Brown repeatedly brought up how much pressure there is to get the last 3 outs for a save. I think managers do a disservice to their relievers when they talk about how a closer has to have a special mentality for that role as if only 1 pitcher on the staff is capable and no one else can be trusted. Relievers buy into that thinking and those not accustomed to being used in such situations go into it when pressed into service believing that they are not qualified. If you look at any teams' stats from decades ago before the closer became a 9th inning specialist role, there was always 1 guy with the most saves and a bunch of other guys with several saves. This was common throughout MLB but just using the Pirates as an example, the 1971 Bucs got 30 saves from their main reliever Dave Giusti. But they got another 18 saves from a combination of 6 other guys. The 1979 Bucs got 31 saves from Teke, 14 from Grant Jackson, 5 from Romo and 1 each from Roberts and Whitson. In that era relievers were not led to believe that getting a save was a severely intense task that only 1 guy in the BP was capable of handling. Instead, they believed that even if they weren't the #1 guy in the BP, they still had the confidence of the manager to get the last 3 outs when called upon.

But regardless, Holmes is not a MLB pitcher.
