Through 7 innings: 1ER, on 6 hits, 8 SOs, no walks (I believe); 91 pitches.

I know its against the Royals, but it was encouraging.

Think Frazier's bat in the lineup full time next year helps a ton.

Trying to figure out why Kela hasn't pitched in like two weeks.  I thought Hurdle wanted to rest him to finish strong.  Seems like he is in witness protection.

I thought Kela is shut down for rest of season as precaution.

Don't know.  I was under the impression Hurdle was giving him two weeks off in order for him to "finish the season strong".  I could be very wrong though.

Pirates did announce he is shut down for the year. A lot of innings.

Why not shut Vazquez down?

Just thought I'd post this since the trend has held true all year.

The Bucs just finished 15-5 against the AL. Only Boston was better against the opposing league at 16-4.

Currently we stand 38-28 against rival Central teams. So 20 games over .500 against the AL and Central. Pretty crazy.

Our bugaboo is the East and the West 12-20 and 12-21 respectively. Just .500 against them and things would be much more interesting. Our play against our division is one of the reasons I remain pretty positive about next year and some of the strides we have made.

If you shut down Kela due to innings pitched, I don't understand why not Vasquez. he has pitched in four of the last five and has hit 66 IP. Then again, Rodriguez is at 65 and Santana is at 66.1.

The Cardinals only have 9 games remaining so the Pirates  have two  games in hand. The only and I mean only possible way this would even come close to getting remotely interesting is if the Pirates swept the Brewers this weekend and the Giants swept the Cards in St Louis. The Pirates would be 3 games back with 8 to play with 2 games in hand on the Cards which would actually be possible to still catch. Of course That’s also counting on the fact that teams ahead of the Pirates still by a game or so the DBacks and Phillies continue to lose as well as Colorado also.

There is a chance! 6 games back officially with 11 games left. Sweep the Brewers this weekend combined with the Cards going into the tank and we might be onto something here. Until then not really any realistic chance.

I think it'e due to Kela already throwing more innings that he did in 2016 and 2017. Vazquez on the other hand has picked around 75 innings the past 2 seasons.

That said , I thought Vazquez would be unavailable tonight.

Last week Kela stated his velocity is normal and he has no injuries, but he is fine with the rest. While hopefully all is well, shutting him down after 52 innings is pretty conservative.

Perhaps the Dodgers wanted to build up Mike Marshall's arm in 1973 when they pitched him in 179 innings over 92 games. That of course forged him for 206 innings over 106 games in 1974....when he won the Cy Young award.
