In partial defense of Marte (there is no defense for throwing to the wrong base), the decision to go (or not go) on contact is a bench decision. He doesn't make that decision. Given that it's risky, as witnessed by the number of times we've had guys thrown out at home trying it, it made sense with no one out to wait on a clear hit. With one out he may well have been sent.
