The team has to notify MLB (and Archer) if they exercise the option. They can't do it secretly.

I think they probably did, but the more time that passes after the deadline, the more I wonder.

I agree with you. Were their PR people away this weekend?

The team has until four today to pick up the option and probably will.

With the way that deal has turned out, they almost had to pick it up and try to salvage something out of it. Do you think if they didn't that money would be re-invested? I don't.

At least we're avoiding the whole "the GM has him on SCHOLARSHIP because he doesn't want to look bad cutting him" meme

Yeah, I don't think there was much doubt. It's no longer a face saving move because the GM who made that trade was fired. But it would still be good to salvage something out of that disaster. And the contract is reasonable, which was a main reason they made the trade. They are hard pressed to find 5 starters as it is and maybe a new pitching coach if not a new organizational philosophy might help Archer become a better pitcher. Even with his salary, the payroll will remain one of MLB's lowest. So there wasn't anything to lose by keeping him. Sadly, even if he has another bad year he probably won't be the worst pitcher in the rotation.

It's kind of depressing that this will probably be the second most interesting moment of the off season after the hiring of a GM.

The GM that made the trade is gone. I'm glad they picked up his option. I want to see what the new group can do with him. I'd hate to see the Astros sign him and turn him into a monster.

Yeah, and disappointment or not, he's one of the Best Five (for good or ill)
