He certainly was intimidating. Not too many hitters dug in when he was on the mound. I remember the gunner saying, " do you prefer Brushless or lather"?

I sat in the lower deck of the center field stands on the night of Gibson's no hitter. It was one of the most thrilling and unforgettable nights I've ever spent at a ballpark, even though it was a feat being performed by an opponent. A really special night.

The broadcast reveals that Pirate fans truly appreciated the historic game they were seeing from Gibson and cheered him on late in the game. Very classy.

That's what I recall as well.  In fact, I remember being surprised that the fans were giving him such nice ovations, that they appreciated what he was doing in spite of who he played for.  It probably helped that the game was a blowout with no hope that the Pirates were going to come back and win but, still, it was great to see what the fans were doing as the game neared its end.

That game wrapped up a putrid stretch where the team lost 7 of 9, scoring 17 runs on 54 hits. The Cards swept them with complete game wins by Carlton, Reuss, and Gibson.
