Cahill is a great pick up by Cherington. With pick ups like Cahill and Todd Frazier, Ben is starting to look like a real GM. Keep up the good work Ben.

Cahill?

Why not!

Bucs need arms. He clearly is not an elite arm, but he has faced a whole bunch more major league hitters than anyone else on the roster. If he is successful, the Bucs are clear winners even if he turns out to be little more than trade bait. And if he fails, 1.5 mil is not much of a risk, particularly with how low the payroll is.

Hopefully this move yields some rewards.

It's been 11 years since he was 18-8 with a 2.97 ERA in 2010. Since then he's been 57-73 with a 4.35 ERA. But I still think it was good to bring in another veteran to help the young pitchers.

Tyler Anderson doesn't have much of a track record either. He was being counted on as the veteran of the group but he never experienced anything remotely close to Cahill's successful 2010 season. I don't expect much from either of them when they pitch but after reading that the Pirates were counting on Keller to provide leadership to the pitchers, it's encouraging that the FO finally realized that having some experience to impart on the inexperienced pitchers might be a better idea than asking the still inexperienced Keller to be a leader.

If he pitches to a 4.35 ERA I'll take that all day long, that has .500 written all over it. That's slightly better than a "quality" start on average. Pitchers in today's game with 4.35 ERA's don't win you games, but they don't lose them either. They just give you a chance.

Hopefully the Pirates would have enough offense to make a 4.35 ERA good enough for .500. I think a .500 pitcher on this team will be an achievement. In any case, bringing a few veterans to this team is a good idea and they've done that with Frazier, Anderson and now Cahill. Even if their best contributions don't show up in the stats.

Cederlind's injury may have more to do with the signing of Cahill than an initial assessment that the Bucs needed more pitching.

Really unfortumate news on Cederlind.

True dat, Mainer. Although we are deep in the bullpen, I hate to see tomorrow's closer hurt today!
