What to do with Polanco

The Pirates will lose a 105 games without him or 109 with him. Time to send him home.

I don't think they prefer losing 105 to losing 109. That could be the difference the #1 signing pools and #3.

I will forever believe that Marte was a bad influence during Polanco’s critical early development.

Obviously, I wasn't there, but it seems to me like Polanco's career is pretty well explained by his injury history. He gets hurt regularly, seems to take a long time to come back, has maybe tried to come back too quickly sometimes.

So you're saying that the Pirates management is trying to do everything they can in order to lose, to do what they can to be the worst team in baseball? I understand the reason but I find it distasteful. Trying to lose runs counter to everything we all understand about sports competition.

I don't believe they are trying to lose. Their roster is inadequate for winning as they try to rebuild. They know they will be one of the worst teams this year which will give them one of the first draft picks next year. The MLB draft is never a sure thing and the first overall pick is often not as productive as subsequent picks. If they have one of the top 3 picks it's a crapshoot as to which of those 3 players will turn out the best. The Pirates will undoubtedly have one of the earliest picks next year. They don't have to tank to ensure #1 over #2 or #3. When they picked Cole #1 overall, he didn't reach his potential until they dealt him. When they drafted Alvarez #2 overall, Eric Hosmer at #3 or Buster Posey at #5 would have been better picks. When they picked Taillon #2 overall, Manny Machado was the better pick at #3. Aiming for a particular draft slot in the MLB draft doesn't ensure that player will be better than the one picked next. It's not worth tanking for.

I believe that by intentionally creating this poor roster, they're assuring themselves of losing. To me, that's the same thing as trying to lose.

There was nothing from keeping the Pirates from signing several of the available free agents on the market. They had the money and there certainly were plenty of jobs available. While free agents offer no guarantees, like draft choices, at least they've proven themselves to be major league-capable.

What we're going to witness from this team this year is disgraceful. Again, I understand the reason, but I think there was intention to assure the worst possible record so that their goal, to get that first draft choice, could be attained.

Polanco is off to a robust .059 start (1 for 17). Hopes of him matching last year's output of .153 are beginning to fade.
