Greg Brown says Walk made an excellent point in suggesting that on the foul pop dropped by Molina, the infield fly rule should have been called if it was a routine play and since it was not called, Molina should not be charged with an error. But Walk's "excellent point" failed to note that the infield fly rule does not apply to foul balls.

Gotta rest Brubaker. Can't let him go beyond 6 innings, 79 pitches. ::)

Oh well. No surprise that Shelton's lineup couldn't get more than 1 run. And that came on one swing from his .200 hitting cleanup batter. Obviously, Shelton was not interested in winning with his best starter on the mound and the day before his pitcher will be making his MLB debut. Looks like he's trying to split the series.

Glad Hayes is resting. It's tough for a 24 year old to work 3-4 hours a day pretty much standing around.

Ok, they counted wrong, it's 20 games in 20 days but they only missed it by 1. But for the rest obsessed Pirates, it's their rationale for lineups like today. Shelton's concern that players are now getting past the amount of games played last year seems misguided (like everything else about him, so what else is new?). Last year was the outlier. This year is the return to normalcy. This year featured the same conditioning and preseason that always got players through 162 games in other years. But the Pirates approach it as if they must be on the verge of exhaustion before the season is even half over because last year was only 60 games.



So we're going to see lots of rest for Hayes and anyone else who's valuable to the team and starts for AAA pitchers like Kranick tomorrow. Gotta have everyone well rested for the stretch drive. Not used to playing more than 60 games.  ::)


Resting young men, all who've probably played over 100 games on travel teams each summer since they were in their late teens, with a four day rest coming at the end of these 20 straight days, is indefensible.  If Hayes had four at bats today instead of one, might that have made a difference?
