Even if Archer had pitched well it would have been a bad deal for the pirates in the long term.

I think Neil panicked and made a very bad tactical decision: he was taking a slim chance that the 2018 Pirates could compete through the second half of the season. He was already on the hot seat for the sudden and shocking dismantling of the 2013-2015 team so he had to do something and hope for Lightning in a bottle. He traded the future for the slimiest of hopes in 2018. He suddenly managed like Dave Littlefield.

There was no indication at that time that either Glasnow or Meadows would develop to what they were, so that part's questionable.  Neither was setting any worlds on fire.

And, if the goal was to go for it right then and there, how many care about the long term?

That trade led to so many questions about value and our development that it causes PTSD- Past Trade Suckling Decision.

I liked the aggressiveness, but in no way do I think that was made to appease fans.  It was an overpay; a poor decision and then some.  We were in a bidding war for Archer- one that we lost.....by "winning."  :((((

We'll see more, but we'll also see our share of good ones.  We'll feel that sting a while longer, unfortunately.

Have to disagree re Meadows. He had hit over .300 at every minor league level until AAA. And he was hitting .294 at Indy when the Pirates called him up. He was supposed to be just a fill in while they had some injuries. But Meadows homered in 3 of his first 6 MLB games and was hitting .317 in his first 36 games as a Pirate. The Pirates seemed concerned about his super 2 status and as soon as he cooled off for 3 games, he was benched and then returned to AAA. 2 weeks later he was traded. But he had backed up good hitting in the minors by hitting .292 in his taste of MLB pitching over 154 ABs. He looked like a legit #1 pick bat. Tampa could see they were getting a quality bat. And if the Pirates' goal was to go for it right there and then, adding a declining pitcher having his worst career season didn't appear to be the right approach.

Agree on the minors piece, but you know Suspects....some hit at the MLB level, some miss. He had spurts, but, for some mysterious reason, I guess Meadows didn't fit into the team's plans at that time.

That's youngsters for us. They develop at different times, different places. If I had that answer, I'd be selling it for great big money.

It's also veterans for us. Not every reclamation project works. For every Burnett, there are four Archers.

But, there's only one Pittsburgh Pirates! :)

There is simply no way to describe the Meadows trade other than among the dumbest trades of all time. The guy looked fantastic in a Pirate uni and then has a couple quiet games and he’s shipped to Indy and then to Tampa. what the...

Tike Redmond got more of an opportunity then Meadows and Pedro Alvarez was granted permission to throw at fans along the 1st baseline without interruption. Underachieving and uninterested Starling Marte was allowed to sleep in the outfield like Lucy and Gregory Polanco was rewarded with a long term contract that apparently the Pirates can’t trade if they attached Mitch Keller to it, so Keller pitches like an inconsistent number 4 until he’s hurt.

But Meadows was no sure thing cause there is no sure thing. But Meadows was as close to a sure things that The Pirates ever see.

Still, he did cool down for a couple days.

Look on the bright side. The worst trade decision ever still has to be Babe Ruth to the Yankees.

Took the Red Sox how long to recover? We didn't trade a Babe Ruth, so our recovery time should be about half of Boston's.

Good point. We HAD Babe Ruth. Let him walk for nothing, so we made off better than the Red Sox. ;)

But, we have a worse curse. :((((
