So if some fans felt the trade was a salary dump, it was actually not. As you say, the trade was made for the return the Bucs received.
Getting rid of a gold glove catcher for someone who hit 100 points less and spending 2.5 million more. My head is spinning

He had shoulder and finger injuries for the last two seasons. If he can stay healthy for the same number of games Stallings caught, you'll forget Stallings was even here.

For some people, EVERYTHING is a salary dump when the trade or DFA happens. The split second up to that point? "Just a guy....AAAA.....minor leaguer.....add whatever negative yinzerism here". That's assuming they even know who the player was before they looked up their stats on baseball reference.

Too many blowhards who don't watch the team or MLB, only grazing on a few sites for their "opinion".

Frankly, this move is everything that the Pirates NEVER do: they actually spent extra money in order to get pieces to build this team. The Marlins had pieces Ben wanted, the Marlins want Stallings in return; Stallings is a nice player but he has nothing to do with the next contending team the Pirates put on the field. Ben moves Stallings and spends real dollars to acquire another place-holder.

Earlier some posters were concerned because a hole was created at catcher. I get that. But now the concern is the Pirates spent TOO MUCH!

Perez has won 2 GGs.

This guy won't be part of a rebuilt team. He's too old.

Reality is that Cherington needed an MLB starting catcher for the current version of the Pirates, so he had to overpay a bit. But that's OK because the Stallings trade looks pretty good right now.

Neither Stallings nor Roberto Perez would be part of a rebuilt team. That role goes to last year's #1 overall pick Henry Davis. Perez will take over as the strong defensive catching placeholder for Davis that Stallings was serving as while enabling the Bucs to pick up a decent return for Stallings.

I guess they believe the batting average can come up dramatically with full-time play or perhaps under the new hitting coach.

I was thinking last season if the OTHER Perez could hit to where he moved his BA to .185, it would seem like we somehow got Johnny Bench.

Perez has been troubled by right shoulder strain the past few years which effected both his throwing and batting. The signing is contingent on passing the physical. I guess they feel if he's healthy enough to pass the physical, he'll be healthy enough to hit better.
