Does anyone feel sorry for Cleveland. First it was the weird new team name, now it's Huntington - https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/03/ ... stant.html

I'll just say that some towns and some people deserve each other.

Then again, that Huntington's looking pretty good compared to what we have now. Cherington better get it in gear.

I'm always glad when someone who's off work finds a job.  I'm especially glad Huntington found one in Cleveland and is no longer doing his old one here.  We're in far better hands with Cherington as GM.  He's done a remarkable job of doing just what he set out to do:  rebuild the organization from the ground up.

Really? That's an interesting take. Cherington is dealing with the mess Huntington left him. Huntington had to deal with the mess Littlefield left him. Other than the bizarre mini 2020 covid season of just 60 games with the minor leagues totally shut down, last year was Cherington's first normal season. And he already has one of the highest ranked minor league systems in MLB. So it looks like he's getting it in gear. Yes, they were pathetic last season and lost 101 games.

So let's look at how Huntington started out: 2008: 95 losses. Then a worse 2009: 99 losses. Then an even worse 2010: 105 losses. Then 90 losses in 2011. It wasn't until 2012, NH's 5th season as GM, that the Pirates even sniffed .500 at 79-83. Then 3 good years going to the post season during which Nutting actually got as high as 75% of the MLB average payroll. Which he promptly backed away from as if it was radioactive.

Let's hope Cherington never loses 105 games as Huntington did. On the plus side, BC's minor league system already seems to be much better than it ever was under NH. On the minus side, I have my doubts that Nutting will ever approach the average payroll again as he did for Huntington. Nutting tried it; he didn't like it. But unless we revise history and pretend that Huntington started off like gangbusters, I don't know how we can conclude he looks pretty good compared to Cherington after 1 full season during which the minor league system has significantly improved.

Who said Huntington's looking pretty good compared to what we have now? Based on what?

OK. I'll admit that I didn't use an apples-to-apples basis.

Agree that both inherited dumpster fires.

I dn give a rat's posterior about any minor league talk. That's just punting and selling the future, AFIAC. We have no idea who will become Pirates. Some will. Some won't.

Nice summary, Bobster. Cherington's body of work throughout his baseball career is miles ahead of what Huntington has accomplished. The Pirates are in much better hands today than they were under the previous administration.

It appears that the Reds' management is in a complete state of disarray. Their latest move to trade for Minor and take on salary after recently shipping out Gray and earlier waiving Miley does not make much sense on the surface. I know we have no starting pitching, but maybe we can finish ahead of the Reds this year.
