If Hoglund does not sign they lose his entire slot amount of $1,967,900. That would drop their available spending to $416,725 after the tenth round.

As for next year, 2019, the Hoglund pick is protected so they would get compensation at the 37th pick and it would be protected for next year meaning they would get compensation in 2020 for the lack of signing of the 2019 pick.

Just about 24 hours until the signing period ends, and it appears that there will be no significant player signing. I guess Hoglund had a change of mind after meeting with the Pirate Brass.

he must believe he can move up the draft chart in a couple years at MS. Cashout on the slot difference. I like his guts to do it.

Gamble. Not like he's a top 15 pick.

That would be surprising because prior to taking him in the draft I would have assumed a scout would have talked to him to get some indication the amount he was looking at in order to sign. Also a day or two after being drafted he declared he was going pro. This entire situation is very strange.

Note that the Bucs spent $500k (or $375k above the slot value) per the MLB draft tracer to sign their 11th round pick, Michael Burrows, a HS pitcher from CT. That leaves very little in the bank to spend on above slot on anyone. Maybe $100k or so. So, if Hoglund won't sign for slot or very close, he's not coming. And the Bucs can't use any of his $1.9M slot on anyone else. If he indicated he would sign below slot before the draft, he put the FO in a very bad spot if he changed his mind. They may have been expecting extra money to sign some of those other late HS picks. I'm not blaming a 18-19 year old for changing his mind. It's just a very tough break if that's how it has played out. And, of course, I have no idea if that's at all what really happened. Just a theory.
