Formerly a good pitcher, Quintana is coming off his worst season and has an opportunity with the Pirates that he likely would not have with most teams. He has had shoulder and thumb issues the past 2 seasons and although almost exclusively a starter most of his career he spent more time in the bullpen last year than as a starter. For 2021 he had a combined ERA of 6.43 in 10 starts and 19 relief appearances. It's a chance for Quintana to revive his career and I doubt that there were many teams willing to pencil him into their rotation.

Per the Post-Gazette:

Quintana has right around average velocity, throwing his four-seamer at 91.5 mph in 2021. He also throws a curveball, sinker an changeup, a pitch mix that has been fairly consistent through his career...

As durable as any pitcher during his first eight MLB seasons, Quintana has had some injury issues over the past two. He spent time on the injured list in 2021 with inflammation in his left shoulder and dealt with left lat inflammation and a nerve problem in his left thumb in 2020.

While Quintana did rack up more strikeouts in 2021, he also saw his walk rate jump. Quintana walked a career-high 5.0 per nine innings, which is nearly double his career mark of 2.6.

In addition to the wildness, Quintana has also been hit much harder over the past two seasons, allowing a hard-hit percentage of 50.0 in 2020 and 45.5 this past season. That number didn’t rise above 37.9 between 2015 (the first year said data is available) and 2019.

Opposing hitters also have the highest and second-highest exit velocities against Quintana the past two seasons at 94.5 mph (2020) and 90.6 mph.

he may be the staff ace in 2022.

Sad but true. The team's not going to compete in '22, but the difference from '21, I believe, will be that we'll begin to see a handful of the young guys who'll be part of the next competitive team. We'll still see filler players like Quintana but, as the season progresses, a few young guys will start to play regularly as they replace those guys. I think the second half of next season is the beginning of the good times ahead.

Maybe it's a good thing for you that Shedman is no longer on the board

I miss that guy. He was good for a few laughs. His Offseason thread is still going strong even though he's been missing. What happened to him anyway? Maybe we should send out a search party.

Sorry but I see Quintana as Trevor Cahill part 2. Tyler Anderson offered some hope of reliability, and he was our poor man's ace. Please sign Anderson!

I am more concerned about the roster space that Quintana will take up if he does not pan out and they finally decide to release him. To me it is not about the money but more about a roster space like we had with Pooplanco last season.

It's so nice knowing the team is free and clear of him. I know he caused me a lot of anxiety.

I wonder if the Pirates are trying to set up a trade to make room on the 40 man roster. It's been a couple days since this broke, no moves announced. All quiet on the twitter front too.

Would have thought the physical would have been done and the deal signed by now.

Maybe they're off on break?
