Just thought of this. Gibson once left a note above his spring training locker, answering all of the reporters' repetitive questions:

"In case I'm not here. (1) Knee feels bad. (2) Weather doesn't matter. (3) Arm doesn't feel too good yet. (4) None of your damn business."

Dick Groat was my first baseball hero. When he was traded to the Cardinals, they immediately became my second team, too. As an adult, they've remained that way because I've come to appreciate how they've been competitive so many years since Branch Rickey constructed their farm system back in the 1920s. That franchise has been run the right way ever since. If I was from St. Louis, I'd be darn proud that the Cardinals were my home town team.

I always kinda liked the Cardinals too. At least in the 1960s. Not so much anymore. I liked the guys you mentioned plus Ken Boyer. They had great pitching with Carlton and Briles besides Gibson. They even got Dick Groat. And Bob Skinner. It's ironic that Javier was blocked by Maz but ended up being a teammate of Groat anyway.

The Cardinals always seem to be competitive. Can't remember when they have finished in the cellar

Do they meet their budget objectives every year though?
