Like everyone else, I'd like Archer to be more efficient. Nevertheless, I like the fact that he is a TOTALLY different look for the opposing team and that's to the Pirates advantage.

Archer doesn't have to be the Pirate's #1 or 2. Go get his 5.2 innings or whatever and I think he's a strong presence in the rotation.

Since Archer became a full time starter in 2013, he's averaged 5.6 (2013), 6.1 (2014), 6.2 (2015), 5.9 (2016), 5.9 (2017) and 5.5 (2018) innings per start. Career is 5.9. He went 6 yesterday. That's basically the norm for him. I'm sure the Pirates were aware of that when they made the trade. He only averages 3 walks per 9 innings so he's not wild. But he usually goes deep in the count by trying to get batters to chase. He doesn't miss by a lot so he gets those chases by batters who are afraid it might be called a strike. That's just his style and I don't think Searage will tinker with it. He's a tough pitcher to face for 5 or 6 innings but then he's gone. Since there's no magic to the 100 pitch rule, maybe they could let him go 110-115 and get an extra inning a lot of the time from him.

Taillon averaged 6.0 last year (191 innings 32 starts).

For all those suggesting that Archer doesn't miss bats:

"Pittsburgh Pirates: Chris Archer has induced the lowest rate of contact on pitches inside the strike zone, leading all of baseball with a 67.7 percent Z-Contact%. The previous seven leaders in that metric have finished no lower than third in Cy Young voting."

Archer is the ultimate "Grass is Greener" Pirate.  For how many years did we hear about how "Nuttingz will never do the brave thing and get someone we need like Chris Archer?"  I mean, Archer was the specific pitcher people liked to bring up whenever they made a statement like that.

Now that he is a Pirate, all of a sudden to some of those same people he's not so great.

Last year was disappointing for sure for him, but looking okay so far now.  Yeah I would like him to last a little longer like I said above--but maybe he's just not the ten-foot-tall marble statue that people made him out to be when he played for another team, when the ownership wouldn't "man up" and go get him.

He can be frustrating for sure, but man is he fun to watch. His stuff is electric and he's easy to root for. I think we have to remember also that he is also working on a change up. I think I heard he threw it 16 times in his last start. Hopefully he is getting a feel for it?

I also just think that typically if you have a lot of strikeouts you're going to also have a lot of pitches. It's just math. But yeah I hope a changeup could make his stuff look even better.

16 out of 100 is plenty to give the hitters something to think about. good for him for adding a pitch.

With the sieve the Pirates call a defense, Archer's Ks will be invaluable.

Just read where Archer has been suspended for 5 games.

edit--Puig 2 games and David Bell 1 game. You figure that a five game suspension for a pitcher is the same thing as a one game suspension for a position player.

I can live with that 5 gamer for Archer.
