in my view last year was the pass. The clock is ticking now. Getting Underwood shows that BC thinks the team is still not likely to have enough decent pitchers.
He picked up someone out of options and for a player rather than just cash considerations. To me, that is saying they think he has a good chance to make the team which reflects poorly on those already in the organization.

Is Mitch Keller another example?
Mitch dominated the minors and then 2019 he struggled terribly on the majors. I imagine every Pirate fan groaned at the prospect of another disappointment.
2020 is a very SSS, but Mitch produced much better results.

Keller's ERA was better, his pitching was much worse. His K rate was almost cut in half and his walk rate tripled. His 11 starts in 2019 were much more encouraging than his 5 starts in 2020. If anything, the Pirates god awful defense in 2019 killed him.

I have to disagree. Lowering his ERA from 7.13 in 2019 to 2.91 in 2020 was a huge step forward. The walks in 2020 were very frustrating but he lowered his hits per 9 innings from 13.5 in 2019 to 3.7 in 2020. So even with the influx of walks, his WHIP of 1.246 last year was a huge improvement over his 1.833 of 2019. And he significantly improved those stats despite a huge reduction in Ks. So maybe he went from trying to throw the ball past hitters to learning to pitch. Now he needs to reduce the walks which will also lower the pitch count so he can go further into games.

The author of the article, Jason Mackey, was on the Fan this morning with more on pitcher development. He said that the analytic tools used in the last regime were from the "stone ages" and that there were other pitchers who expressed how bad the team was at using those tools. They just wouldn't go on the record.

That started when several veterans who seemed past their prime had their careers resurrected under Searage. Liriano, Volquez, Melancon and Happ all did well under Searage. But he never had a lot of success with young prospects.
