2020 Amateur Draft

Post by fjk090852-7 »

This improved play has now moved the Pirates at least two positions later in the June Amateur Draft. I was thinking about a week ago their draft position would be sixth, but now it appears it will be eighth or even ninth.

I don't think they are in tank/rebuild mode, so I think it's more important to finish out the season strong than to get the 6th pick.

I disagree. I think they need to finally do a full-on rebuild. I think they should shop anyone and everyone, including Bell, Newman, and Reynolds. I think we’re years away from competing.

I disagree on a number of fronts. For one, I like the farm system, and absent Lux type acquisitions, there's no need to add more players to the farm. And as we've seem, no team, regardless of position is going to give up a Lux. The system has maybe a dozen potential breakout candidates next year, Aside from Keller, Cruz and Hayes, I could see Martin, Mitchell, Swaggerty, Bolton, Priester, Thomas, Florez Castro, Bae, and Herman becoming top 100 prospects in baseball.

They have to figure out how to do run prevention again. The organization used to excel at this, then the lost it. Probably a combination of coaching and strategy, but either way, they have to both provide a boost to the rotation and derive better production from what they have.

the Pirates seem to have a lo of potential in the system.  However, in my view this only enables them to tread water.

For a team like the Pirates the farm system has to be in the top three or 4 in baseball year in and year out.  In a vacuum, the Bucs system looks like it has a lot of prospects.  But it won't do the team much good if 10 or 11other teams have systems that are  similar.

for the major league team, it needs to field better, hit better and pitch better. those things are hard to do without changing a lot of players. (if we could combine Moran's bat with Gonzo's glove we'd be on to something.
