If Archer gets straightened around the Bucs have 4 very good starting pitchers going into next season. I am going to guess they will try to move Nova this offseason and fill the fifth starting pitcher slot with Kingham, Holmes, Brault or a minor league free agent until Keller gets called up around mid June.

Not to dismiss what he's doing (far from it) but it really speaks to the state of offense in Baseball when a 3.30 ERA is good enough for 9th in the NL.

I’m actually very optomistic about the pitching going into 2019. Offense...who knows...but pitching, I like.



Taillon, Archer, Musgrove, Williams is a solid 1-4. Kingham has shown enough potential to be serviceable at 5.



Bullpen should be pretty good as well. Rodriguez, Santana, Crick, Kela, Vazquez are five dependable arms. I have a bit more confidence in Brault coming out of the pen than starting.



And with Mercer, Harrison, Freese, and potentially Nova coming off the books, there should actually be some room in the salary. Mercer, Harrison, and Freese alone is worth about $20 million in salary, figuring in their respective buyouts next year. I see no reason to believe that Newman, Kramer, Frazier, Hech (whom I would resign), Tucker can’t duplicate their performance for far less money.



Rodriguez's salary coming off the books adds another $5.75 million. Even with suspected arb raises, there still should be plenty there to go out and upgrade the rotation even more. If they find takers for Nova and/or Cervelli, the Bucs could actually be in play for some real talent.

Yeah, we're not in the Bob Gibson 1.12 ERA era anymore! Smaller parks, better bats. Maybe even a lighter ball. Even NL pitchers have to face a few DHs instead of pitchers in interleague play. But also, pitchers are usually pulled at 100 pitches even if they are cruising, which is normally 6-7 innings. Williams was pulled at 92 pitches last night in a 6-inning shutout with 92 pitches. Years ago he might have added 3 more shutout innings and further reduced his ERA. But starters rarely get a chance to further reduce their ERA in the late innings.
