Of course that is the problem with MLB, no salary cap no chance for small market teams to compete long term with big market teams.

That horse has been beaten ad nauseum.  Alot of regulars here tend to pump that website and the analysis coming from it.   I disagree generally and am not fan of the owners frequent analysis.    Tim was one of the bloggers years ago who believed in consistent competitiveness until it became obvious that NH wasn't talented enough to draft well, thus requiring windows to compete. The tune was then changed (as usual).  Windows  of competitiveness is a plan and strategy which had been successfully executed by several small market teams, starting with the Marlins 2 championships, most recently with the Royals two pennants.  This is not a new idea.  The disparity in resources is not a new development.  The league being unfair, not a new playground.   Repackaging these situations today is like rehashing baseball since the 1990s.

Our FO is still believing and talking about constant competitiveness. "We've been in a position to add in july for 8 years".   They're still operating like they're smarter than everyone else in a few other areas too. Opinions to replace the buffoons running this club have become a real thing in the pirates blogosphere which P2 participates. However that's a relatively recent development and frankly, they're all late to the party, as usual.      NHs incompetent execution has buried us for the foreseeable future.

I agree and disagree with you. Disagree on your slamming of Tim but that is not worthwhile arguing about. Rather I do agree with the idea that of NH incompetence in all areas of player acquisition and development I agree is the main area of problem with the Bucs with the exception of the penny pinching owner. This club needs more than just a new owner and management team. They need that and an entirely new baseball operations staff both on the field and in the office. From scouting to actual hands on working with the kids. It is almost like tearing down and beginning again like an expansion team with the exception we do have a few talented kids already in the system.

Anf they're already at $110M? They like their core and are going to invest around them?

Compared to Neal's most recent comments: "we can't afford players like Liriano and Volquez. They're beyond our means. Cry cry, snif snif"

Gotta blow it to smitherines, position player wise. Hold the rotation, minus Nova. Let them grow. Blow the rest of it off the map.

There isn't a single position player I think is worth building around, either because their future is bleak or they won't be here in a couple years when the team has a shot at mediocerty. Sure there are a few guys worth retaining, but only filling the position until a better player can be found or developed.

Surely we can trade Vasquez and Marte now, right? This team is dead for at least two years

Vasquez looks to me like the perfect trade candidate. He's playing well at the moment and plays a position a team will want, and more importantly, overpay for. I would look at what can be had for Marte as well, although the argument is better there to hold on.

Word is Houston is looking for a closer. I am ok trading Vazquez if we get a truly top tier prospect in return --- even if we have to add a chaser to Vazquez. He is likely our best trade chip. Only include him for a can't miss prospect that we can build around.

Cleveland is another team with a late-inning need.
