Reynolds has hit at every level until this season. I think the "sophomore jinx" is a real thing. But not a jinx. Rather a state of mind. It's when a rookie has more success than was anticipated and then has to start all over again the next year with the pressure of high expectations on him.

In preseason 2019 we heard little about Reynolds even tho he had a very impressive minor league hitting history. When they had an early season injury to Dickerson it was Jason Martin who got the call. It wasn't until there was an injury soon thereafter to Marte that they had to dig deeper and recall Reynolds. Most expected he would stay with the club a week or 2, get his 1st taste of MLB and return to AAA when Marte returned.

But Reynolds had a hit in his 1st game, 3 in his 2nd game and began his MLB career with an 11 game hitting streak in which he hit .417 with 6 2Bs and a HR. They couldn't get him out of the lineup. So the guy who wasn't even their 1st choice to recall to replaced an injured OFer ended up their best overall hitter, was 3rd in HRs, and finished 4th in ROY votes. Their 1st choice, Martin, has become an afterthought.

Reynolds could not have expected 2019 to turn out that way in his wildest dreams. At best he likely hoped for a call up at some point even if only briefly and probably not as a regular in the lineup. But he went into 2020 aware of the expectation that would be the team's best pure hitter. That's a lot of pressure that he didn't have last year. I suspect next year he will be more relaxed and just thankful to get off to a fresh start.

I think that's the nature of the "sophomore jinx" when young players try to deal the with the pressure of high expectations in their 2nd year that weren't there in their rookie year.

Yeah. He's jinxed.

He's jinxed that he has no one hitting around him. Pitchers get to pitch to him.

I see no ML free agents coming to Pittsburgh this offseason. There is already talk that only the top of the line FA's will get contract offers this off season as all teams still face uncertainty with revenue and ticket sales, etc. going into next season. Marginal FA's will not get more than minor league deals. Since the Pirates are never players for top tier FA's, that means they will only acquire players on minor league deals or thru trades. Biggest offseason "acquisition" will be Taillon, and who knows what we can expect.

Yep, another off-season has arrived and the Pirates, once again, are not in the play-offs.

While the Bucs have never really been a factor in free agency (except losing players to free agency), in looking at next year's list of free agents on MLB Trade Rumors (list below), there does not appear to be a lot of talent to get excited about, particularly talent that could offer much for 3 or more seasons.

As such, and in addition to Nutting being cheap, I believe BC will need to try and rebuild the club through trades. Nearly every current player should be available in a potential trade. Perhaps Rodriguez, Musgrove, Bell, and/or Frazier could attract some interest. I view Polanco as a lost cause when it comes to a trade, even if the Bucs agree to cover parts of his remaining salary.

In short, 2021 looks pretty bleak. Inadequate talent on the existing roster, not much available through free agency, and the team lacks players who may bring much back through trades. Tough road ahead for BC, the franchise and for the team's fans.

Lastly, out of the following list --- Who do you recommend the Bucs pursue as a free agent?

many of the players on this list would be an upgrade over what we have, but these cheapskates just will not spend the money to bring any of them in to Pittsburgh. Instead they will just kick the can down the road to 2022.

I blame Yinzers.

They hate guys who make bank.

Play the kids.

And finish dead last so you can get more kids who don't cut it, either.
