Jason Mackey is reporting that Yajure is having elbow and forearm soreness and will miss his next start. The Pirates have a dark cloud over them.

Where was the "dark cloud" when it comes to McCutchen's injuries witht he Phillies? "Dark clouds" don't just show up, and they don't just show up in one place.

Now I know why he didn't get called up for a start when there was an opening.

He was looking to be the best of the lot so far in the trades.

I am not going to get in a peeing contest, but the Pirates have had their fair share of pitchers arm injuries over the years. It is a darn shame that the pitchers cannot stay healthy. In no way I blame Huntington or Cherington. It is part of today’s game that more pitchers need surgeries. When I hear all these injuries to pitchers I hope the Bucs take a position player number 1 in July.

I didn't take it as such. No way were you critical of anyone. I agree with you on the arm troubles with our pitchers (and, in Taillion's case- his cancer.) We've certainly had more than our share in recent times.

The two New York teams are going through it these days. Of course, the key differences are A) can the farm teams produce enough "replacements" until they heal up? and B) are teams able to make trades or buy their way out of trouble?

Correction: The Yankees are going through some injuries; not necessarily to their pitchers.

Although Yajure has had a cup of coffee in the majors; so far the best performer that came over in trades has been Contreras

Medicine and science were different. There WASN'T Tommy John (surgery) until there was a TOMMY JOHN (player.)

I think a lot of pitchers still had arm problems in the olden days. Wally Bunker and Bill Stafford are two pitchers with short careers. Jim Bouton pitched longer but was ineffective after his third season.

If I remember right both Koufax and Drysdale retired because of injuries (Koufax could have kept pitching but didn't want to)

I was too young, and haven't read as much about Koufax and his decision to retire. I thought Sandy retired because his arm was arthritic and was too painful for him to pitch. Do I have that wrong?

At any rate, if it was true that he had an arthritic arm, then I wouldn't know whether today's medicine would have been helpful if it was available to him in his time.

I agree with your overall point- that some of yesterday's pitchers- for all we know- could have extended their careers if they came along later.

I'm not a big proponent on comparing guys from so long ago. Life was so much different then that it's not the fairest of comparisons. It's not fair to the guys from back then. It's not fair to the more modern guys, either.

To use a football analogy, "The lineman of yesterday (1940s)...is a placekicker today." I'm not going to cite the reference.
