PSSSTTTT ... we needed to acquire a fourth anyway.  Now, a fifth is needed.

that's the downside of Neal H. being gone. He had foreseen this situation and traded for Jason Martin. Ben C. may not be as good at contingency planning.

I believe even before the injury the Bucs knew they needed another outfielder, but now it is imperative that they bring someone in who is a much better than the Dyson signing of last offseason.

Jay Bruce is available and I think he would come cheap

Jay Bruce in RF instead of Polanco? What's to even think about? It wouldn't matter to me how many times he struck out because the overall results would have to be way better. And if he's having a decent year by the Deadline, he could return a good young player or two perhaps.

The Pirates had a real chance to really fortify the system by signing some of these veteran types that could have a good first half and you trade them at the TDL for prospects. You are buying these guys for one year at a CoVid discounted rate and when you deal them, the money goes, so you are only paying 65%. Instead we won't be bringing in anything like a Bruce or a bunch of the relievers that could command something.

Sadly, you're probably right. What we don't know is the amount of payroll Nutting has set for BC. Because of last year's COVID mess, he might be restricted in a way that prohibits any ability to do something like we suggest. I fear it's going to get worse with that organization before it's going to get better.

Doc, it's hard to imagine what "worse" would look like for Nutting's team. :'(
