I thought that the Padres were trying to climbing back into the pennant race.   Perhaps the Padres have been consulting the Pirates' analysts and manager regarding the need for rest.  Or, perhaps Soto needs some recuperation time after last night's home run and the accompanying gaze and bat flip. 
It's only the 2nd game this season he hasn't started. Shelton would have had him on the bench a lot more than that. ;)
