One of the names that have been rumored is Pillar who has a past relationship with Cherington. Pitchers and catchers report in about two weeks so I would expect a player to be acquired or signed before then.

I can see Pillar being a Pirate if he comes in very cheap (like $2 million at most with possible bonuses). It says something that he is on the market this long. He will be a big step down from Marte.

here is quote from MLB Trade Rumors that I posted above in December:

Frankly, it’s not surprising to see the Giants pass at that price. Pillar is a gritty performer who still makes his share of highlight-reel plays and has good pop for an up-the-middle player. But advanced analysis suggests he has lost a step in the field and he continues to turn in cringeworthy on-base numbers.

Last season, Pillar slashed just .259/.287/.432 (85 wRC+). That marked his fourth consecutive season of offensive performance more than ten percent below league average. When Pillar was an elite defender in center, that perhaps would have sufficed, even at a relatively lofty price point. However, he’s rated as a mere average center fielder the past two season, combining for -7 defensive runs saved and +2 runs per Ultimate Zone Rating. Statcast, meanwhile, pegged him as a 51st percentile outfielder in 2019. Combined with his lackluster bat, that defensive downturn proved too much for the Giants.

There’s always that Bucs killer ( Billy Hamilton ).

I wouldn't mind seeing Hamilton in CF, especially if he could learn to take walk a little more often.

Here are Hamilton's stats. He is an okay back up but that is all. Good fielder and baserunner but no value at all with a bat in his hands.

It’s too bad someone could not teach Hamilton to slap the ball the way Harry Walker taught Matty Alou. With his speed he could easily beat out those slap hits towards third base.

Pillar, Maybin and Hamilton are still on the free agent list waiting for the Pirates to offer one of them a contract. If the price was right I would select Pillar.

Hamilton has signed with the Giants, so another outfielder comes off the board.

Actually, I'm glad the Pirates didn't sign Hamilton. To me, he was always an awful player, except when he faced the Pirates. If he played here, he wouldn't be able to face our pitching so he'd be awful all the time.
