Jose Iglesias Signing Minor League Deal with Reds

MLB Trade Rumors had this news today. I am amazed that the Pirates did not make a modest investment in this guy. Since the price had to be surprisingly low, I'm left feeling that NH was asleep at the switch.

They must really believe that Newman and Gonzalez can play just as well or better than players like Iglesias and Hechavarria. I hope they are correct in their thinking.

Both Iglesias and Dietrich had hands in defeating the Pirates today. For about a total of 5 million dollars both players could have been signed by the Pirates. I know it is just one game, but Iglesias would have been a solid defender at shortstop, and Dietrich would have been a good bench player. I really enjoy following the Bucs, but their stubbornness to not sign quality players is very disheartening. If the fan apathy continues, Pittsburgh may lose their team whenever the lease is up at PNC in about 10 years. That would be a shame, and we can thank Mr Nutting if that occurs.

Yea it still infuriates me that the Pirates IGNORED glaring holes at SS and the 5th starter (which they created themselves by getting rid of Nova) and did literally nothing ... despite having a variety of AFFORDABLE options at both spots. INEXCUSABLE.

The NH interview yesterday was revealing (but nothing we didn't already know). It can be heard on the 93.7 website. He addressed the SS off season situation.

"Between Gonzalez and Newman we felt like we will get what we could have gotten from the available free agents to us and through most of the available trade players. So as we looked around the field and found where else could we upgrade, what else actually fits in the model that is Pittsburgh and is what we have to operate within, we liked our group., We'll continue to be opportunistic but we didn't go in planning to have a slow offseason."

So on one hand, they tell us their goal is to win a WS. But on the other hand, they admit to their self-imposed model that seems to prevent the addition of players who could actually help them achieve that goal.

Anyone could cross up JD for JB. NH thought he was signing Martinez, and Schuck showed up.

Could happen to any of us. Move on and let it go.
