Dickerson has been the MVP (Most Valuable Pirate) so far this season. What should the Bucs do if he continues to perform at this level? He will get 6M this year and will be arbitration eligible again next year. UFA in 2020. Should the Bucs extend him? At what cost? Will Meadows be better than what Corey is producing now. Corey will be just 29 in a couple of weeks.

Try to extend him for at least two years. He's a proven hitter.

A couple years ago they extended Freese during the season around August. I would continue to see how Dickerson does and if he is still playing well I would extend him for two years and an option around August this year. He is been a very valuable player to date. When I noticed he was DFA in February I wanted the Bucs to pursue him. It has been a great trade so far.

This article talks about some of the adjustments Dickerson made after struggling with the fastball last season.

Not sure what it would take to get him signed beyond next year, but I imagine they are at least looking at it and would probably do it sooner than later because the closer he gets to the open market, the higher his price tag.

Also in their favor is the depressed FA market, maybe the Pirates could tempt him with some security

The idea of an extension sounds feasible to me but I wait til later in the season or the off season to see how he does the rest of 2018. Last yr he was an All-Star in the first half of the season and then fell way off in the second half. He is doing the same thing so far in 2018 and I want to see if he can continue the hot hitting for a full season before I extend him.

And this year's FA market is going to be the best in history. May not be much demand for a guy like Dickerson.

Yeah, which is just dumbfounding that he's still in arb next year. I should be over the Rays stupidity of DFA'ing him, but am having trouble.

Its one of the worst moves I've seen in a long time.

Tampa must have been convinced that he was trash after his second half last season. That fangraph article is a good explainer, either way, being gifted an all star corner outfielder, when what this team needed most was an all star corner outfielder has been the difference thus far this year.

Not only did they release/trade him. Daniel Hudson was their best offer? Did no other teams want him either?
