Indians have two lefties that both have ERA's over 12 in a small number of innings. However, I don't think Shelton considered that at all.

Shelton explained his decision to pull Brubaker: "We went into that inning, if we had, you know, a guy on base and we had the left-hander there, we were going to go to Shreve."
What ever happened to waiting to see how an inning plays out and weighing the performance of the starter against the likelihood that a reliever could do any better, if even as well? But this is how a manager operates when he can't think on his feet and weigh options. Shelton had an ironclad plan going into the inning. If Naylor came up with a man on base, Brubaker was leaving the game.
It didn't matter that Brubaker was pitching a masterful game on just 76 pitches with only 3 hits, 1 run, 0 walks and 9 Ks. It didn't matter that LH batters were only 1 for 11 in the game against him. It didn't matter that Naylor, at .247 was not a big threat in the Indians lineup or that the bottom 3 in the order immediately after Naylor were all hitless against Brubaker. It's just easier to run a team when you institute an ironclad rule before the inning begins so that if that situation rises you automatically make the preconceived move without having to think about it. Thinking seems to be a real challenge to Shelton and it appears he's trying to find a way around that. Who needs to think when you set up rules in advance that must be followed regardless?

There are always minor league managers who we haven't yet heard of who will become good MLB managers. There are also probably popcorn vendors at stadiums who would be better managers than Shelton. I doubt he could even handle the popcorn stand.

There are always minor league managers who we haven't yet heard of who will become good MLB managers. There are also probably popcorn vendors at stadiums who would be better managers than Shelton. I doubt he could even handle the popcorn stand.
