At least someone would know the Pirates want to win, right now it's obvious there's no interest in winning. It's about SRod, Freese, Rivero, Bell, all there feelings not about this team winning.

Hurdle manages like a guy who has 4-years of job security.

Rodriguez has started in 33 of 59 games so far this season which is absolutely absurd. I mean does Hurdle feel loyal to the guy that he feels he has to start him at least once a series?? I mean there is just no other team in baseball I can almost guarantee that would not play Rodriguez as much as the Pirates have so far considering how bad he truly has been.

I'm counting 22 starts. Not that he should get even that many.

Relevant to the discussion, here's an excerpt from an article today by Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic:

Hurdle doesn’t like to keep guys on the bench for long stretches, reasoning that the increased number of at-bats will help them in pinch-hitting situations.

Sometimes, Hurdle believes, the opposite holds true. The day before a bench guy is scheduled to make a start, Hurdle will hunt for a pinch-hit opportunity for that player to give him a sort of “head start” on the next game.

“It comes down to awareness and knowing your players,” Hurdle said. “I try to find opportunities for them to have success in a hard situation.”

Is it working? Well … through Saturday, Pirates pinch-hitters had a combined .190 batting average (13th in NL), a .293 OBP (11th) and a .572 OPS (11th).

For all of Clint's empathetic mollycoddling of players the results of his misguided strategy have resulted in lousy pinch-hitting numbers not to mention fewer tallies in the "W" column. So when does someone in the organization have the gonads to tell Clint it ain't working. >:(

The org doesn't seem to care as evidenced his 4 year extension following bad seasons and bad managing.

No, I think it is working. The bench players have been pretty good overall in their spot starts. He said it to get a jump start for the next game. They all had some really big hits and at bats at the beginning of the year.

I don't get the Rodriguez starting. This is just a recent move as Hurdle wasn't really starting him or the "sunday" line up at the beginning of the season. Rodriguez can be used to pinch run and defense. He should only be Mercer's pure back up. I'd rather play Freese at 3B/1B, Frazier at 2B, and any of the four outfielders.

Freese has 3 HRs, 3 Doubles 9 RBIs in 18 starts.

Diaz has 3 HRs, 2 Doubles, 9 RBIs in 16 starts.

Osuna has 1 HRs and 4 RBIs in 5 starts.

Moroff has 1 HRs and 4 RBIs in 6 starts.

Rodriguez has 3 HRs, 4 Doubles, and 10 RBIs in 22 starts.

Overall, I think the bench has been very productive in their spot starts. I have no idea how many pinch hits they had the game before. Frazier has been my biggest disappointment so far this year. I expected more form him. Rodriguez just hasn't shown up with that big at bat/hit as he has been getting more playing time. There are better bench players than Rodriguez. Hurdle needs to use them more.

Former Oriole SS Mark Belanger is often cited in discussions of good fielders who were notoriously poor hitters. Belanger's career BA was .228. Sean Rodriguez has a career BA of .227. He goes for the fences on every swing. 2016 was a career year hitting .270 with 18 HRs. But clearly an outlier. Just 1 of 4 times in 11 years he's topped .223. The other 3 times were .246 twice and .251. The odds of him getting a big hit--or any hit--are less than the odds that Mark Belanger would have gotten one for the Orioles. Seems like Hurdle fears he'll have to answer to the parents if the kids don't get to play enough.

You're wrong about SRod being recent. He's started 30-some percent of games. See Mark Maddons article
