For all of us that witnessed the great Pirate teams of the 70’s; July 18, 1971 was a special day. The Bucs swept a double header from the Dodgers in front of a sell out crowd of 48,000 at TRS.
After a 3-2 first game win, Luke Walker went into the 9th inning of game 2 with a no hitter intact. Unfortunately Joe Ferguson hit a lead off HR to break up the no no. Walker finished the complete game one hitter winning 7-1. This gave the Pirates a 62-31 record.

My dad an I were at the doubleheader. The first game I believe ended in 10 or 11 innings. It was a very warm July day and I told Dad we could leave during the second game if the score got out of hand. My Dad followed the Pirates from the days of Trainor, the Waner brothers, Arky Vaughn as well as Cuyler. He never witnessed a no hitter and he said we have to stay to see if Walker could pitch a no hitter. I could not believe Ferguson hit the homer in the ninth. Unfortunately we did not see the no hitter , but that memory remains with me after Dad has been gone for several years.
