It is too early to give up on him, but if he continues to struggle through May and early June the Pirates may have to release him, and purchase the contract of Mason Martin. Martin has been very good so far at AAA, and it just might end up that the Bucs dodged a bullet whenever it was agreed there would not be a Rule 5 Draft this past offseason since he was not on the 40 man roster.
I am honestly surprised it was a consensus that the resigning was a good move. There is a reason no one was willing to sign him for more than what the Pirates gave him. The guy struggled badly with MLB fastballs. He is struggling again.
As for Martin, the risk with him was very low to be picked in the Rule 5 anyways. More likely a couple pitchers they had would have been picked. Martin was striking out at a very high clip in AA and not walking enough to make up for it. He is striking out less, but walks are down even more this year. 1b only guys with average bats are not exactly something teams are clamoring for, see Colin Moran.
Would Martin be better than Yoshi? Most likely, but he still has some major flaws.
