Rangers Daniels says team will go young

Post by Ecbucs »

Sherten Apostel, who the Rangers got along with Hearn for Kela is now getting a shot with the major league team. He is only 21 so this is a deal that got him to the majors quicker than if he stayed a Pirate.

Rangers president of baseball operations Jon Daniels has now set forth a clear strategic directive for the organization, as covered by Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. The veteran executive says the club’s recent youth movement will likely carry over into the 2021 season.

The Texas team looks a lot less gray of late. The roster is “younger and intentionally so,” per Daniels, who says that will likely “continue[] into next year.” If there was any doubt as to the Rangers’ near-term intentions, Daniels issued a tell-tale cautionary warning against “looking at free agency as the short cut.”

It’s tough to know what to expect from newcomers such as Leody Taveras, Anderson Tejeda, Sam Huff, and Sherten Apostel. But the Rangers believe their current crop of young talent is more “ready for this opportunity” than was the case last year, says Daniels.

There could be some rough patches along the way, but the Rangers intend to find out what they’ve got. “The biggest change is we want to allow them to grow at the major league level,” Daniels explains.

This obviously isn’t the spot the Rangers had hoped to be in at this stage of the season. The club pursued improvements over the winter and had its sights set on contention. But with a host of disappointing performances from key players, the youth movement reflects the reality that there won’t be a quick offseason fix.

Interesting stuff. When relating this info to the Pirates situation, under both NH and BC, we've been given the same message that the team is not rebuilding. The consistency in that message with two different GMs is that the same owner has been in charge of both GMs. He's likely instructed both to not use the word "rebuild" so as not to turn-off the fan base from buying tickets. Good for the Rangers that they're being upfront with their fans. My guess is that the fans will appreciate the honesty and will still provide their support.

I also applaud the Rangers for not fearing letting their young players grow at the major league level. Of course, an organization has to feel fairly good about those players to do that. My guess is that BC realizes he has few, if any, in the minor leagues capable of playing at this level. So he not only has to rebuild the major league roster, but all of the rosters throughout the system. I'm guessing whatever falling back the Rangers will do will be far less and shorter than the Pirates are facing.

Rangers Daniels says team will go young

The difference between Texas and virtually all other teams(except the Pirates) when they "go young" is by the very next year's trade deadline or the next off season, they are out acquiring FA to add. They acquire a few young players as pieces then fill out the team with FA. When the Pirates "go young", they never add the FA and wait until the "young players" approach FA. Then they salary dump them and, you guessed it, they "go young" again.

The Rump Rangers are rebuilding from teams that came close to winning the WS recently.

The Pirates are building again from a team that went to the second round of the playoffs.

I can see the Rangers fans having more faith in ownership and management.

Very true. And by this time every FA who could be an impact player knows all too well to avoid the Pirates unless he doesn't mind tying himself to an irrelevant franchise thru his prime years (which reduces national exposure, endorsement contracts and post playing career opportunities). Not that Nutting would ever pay anyway but even if he magically transformed into a real owner overnight, he would have a very hard time convincing any worthwhile FA to choose the Pirates over more competitive organizations. He would have to grossly overpay just to get someone to consider the Pirates. The only FAs willing to go to the Pirates are bench players looking for a chance to start or down on their luck pitchers hoping to get a chance to revive their careers and then move on once they do.

Nothing against the area or its people. Those two things are nice.

Baseball-wise alone, it might beat playing in a foreign country.
