bad job by Crick. Can't believe at one time this season I thought Crick was closer material.

even worse job by Holmes. Coupled with no hitting. Looks like the swoon continues and is going to make it easy to say this team is out of contention (for anything other than last place in the division).

Freddy...where are you? The other night you bagged on Hurdle yet again for bringing in Felix instead of Rodriguez. Well tonight he brought in Rodriguez and he promptly but the Bucs behind the 8 ball. My point is that it doesn’t matter who Hurdle calls upon; they are all unreliable with the exception of Vazquez.

To borrow a line from Forrest Gump; the Pirates bullpen is like a box of chocolates you never know what you’re gonna get!

Crick has an extreme break on his pitches. Very hard to if hit the batter offers at it but way too often it ends up too far out of the strike zone to tempt the batter. He now has 30 walks in 34 innings including 23 walks in his most recent 17.2 innings. His abysmal average of 7.9 walks per 9 innings is the worst in MLB for pitchers with 18 or more innings. Crick has always suffered from very poor control. In the Giants' system in A in 2012 he walked 67 in 111 IP (5.4 per 9 IP). In high A in 2013 he walked 39 in 69 IP (5.1 per 9 IP). In 2014 in AA he walked 61 in 90 IP (6.1 per 9 IP). In 2015 in AA he walked 66 in 63 IP (9.4 per 9 IP). In 2016 in AA he walked 67 in 109 IP (5.5 per 9 IP). It's notable that he spent 3 years in AA, presumably because his control was so bad. In 2017 in AAA he walked 13 in 29 IP. That was poor but still a career best 4.0 per 9 IP. He was promoted to the Giants that year and walked 17 in 32 IP (4.7 per 9 IP).

Last year with the Pirates was the only time in Crick's professional career that he did not struggle with control, walking only 23 in 60 IP (3.0 per 9 IP). With that control and his breaking ball tough to hit he gave up only 45 hits in 60 IP for a very good ERA a 2.39 in conjunction with a fine WHIP of 1.127, showing few were reaching base against him. As Pirate fans that was our first impression of Crick, that he was a very effective reliever. But we now see that last year was the outlier for his career and the pitcher we now see who can't throw strikes is what he has always been except for last year. I hope 2018 was more than just freakish luck and that Crick doesn't have to be a reliever who nearly always walks 1-2 batters each time he pitches an inning. But judging from his entire professional career, what we see this year is far more consistent with his career than what we saw last year. Moving forward as they will have to totally rebuild the BP next year, they have to realize that Crick cannot be trusted in high leverage situations.
