2021 Draft Standings

Post by fjk090852-7 »

With the DH win last night the Bucs moved above the Angels with having the second worst record in baseball. The Red Sox are just a few percentage points behind the Pirates. I know there are many who want the Bucs to get the #1 or #2 draft pick next year, and if so the Bucs will have to keep pace with the Angels and Red Sox by losing games.

Figures...they can't even get the worst record routine right, and the Angels have guys like Rendon and Trout making 30 million plus, and Upton and Pujols making like 20M apiece....geeesh

What difference does it make if we get the #1, #2, or #3 pick? Those clubs are going to pick the best player available, even if we are 3rd pick, we will pick the most "signable player".

With the selecting and signing of Nick Gonzáles this year, I don’t believe they picked the most signable player. This probably happened in the past, but I don’t expect that under the current Operations Group.

Going back years, I don't think we could say that when we drafted guys like Cutch, Cole, Alvarez, or Bell, either. Wasn't Bell talking about going to college instead? They paid him enough to think twice about it.

I don't think they're against paying draft picks. I think there are other issues involved that affect the ability to rely on them to make the team any better than it was five years ago.

No single player selected is going to transform this team, but you have to start somewhere and roll the dice.

Last I remember the Pirates going that route was 2007 with Moskos and 2009 with Sanchez.

Your slot also dictates how much money you are permitted to spend.

The 2007 draft was the final one for Dave Littlefield, and I think the plan was for the 2009 draft to save money on the #1 choice and use the funds saved to sign some young high school pitchers, but none of them made it to the Majors except one who I think the Bucs traded for Wandy Rodriguez.
