Fangraphs named the top 61 Pirate prospects late last week. As always, their player profiles provide interesting reading. Starting at 61, I read each one, and of course had several thoughts and takeaways.
Something that really intrigued me were comments regarding the upper tier pitchers. For instance, #12 Michael Burrows - “… the meal ticket pitch is the curveball, which has devastating bite and depth.” #9 Jared Jones - “has the best stuff in the system.” #5 Quinn Priester - “has one of the best looking breaking balls on the planet.” FG also noted Jones and Priester top out at 99 mph and Burrows at 97.
Those are some cherry-picked comments, but at least FG put them out there. They had no problem identifying shortcomings in the 61 profiles either.
There are plenty of other debatable items from the FG rankings. But knowing we have some arms that industry insiders are impressed with provides some optimism.
