I wonder if the Pirates are 1 of those 10 teams?

"Some level" of interest covers a lot of territory. Including "very low" level of interest and "If he'll work for free (or even pay us), we'd be very interested."

Pirates make John Baker senior director of minor league operations. Anyone ever hear of him?

He used to be a lineman for the Steelers back in the 60s.

Famously the one that bloodied YA Tittle.

Played in the majors for 7 years (Marlins, Cubs, Dodgers), mostly a backup catcher. Was mentioned a few times in Moneyball as well, and was part of the draft detailed in the book.

Was with the Cubs before working for MLB last year, important and good hire.

If I'm Cherrington, I pick two of the following for the pen ... Yates, Hand, Osuna, Melancon, Colome, Peacock, Wilson, Jeffress, Doolittle, O'Day and Treinen.  Bullpen needs good arms.  Each one of these guys, absent Colome might do a "show me" contract.  I like Treinen alot.

There will be plenty of arms available, not sure what the value would be to target these guys. I guess Melancon to close, but why not just let Rodriguez handle that? The bullpen was not that bad, injuries were the bigger issue, with no minor league season, they were forced to use some guys they would not have normally used.

Per Bob Biertempfl in the Athletic:

One of Baker’s goals is to make the development process more player-centric — a phrase Cherington has frequently uttered in the year since he was hired.

“It means that the player has a stake in his developmental plan and program,” Baker said. “It’s about providing them with the stimulus they need to make adaptations and improve. We’re going to be on the cutting edge of science to make sure that we really are truly data-driven. Being data-driven doesn’t just mean knowing all of the analytics acronyms. It also means following research from biomechanics and psychology.”

This hints that BC just might have a plan!

There have been several negative messages etc regarding the lack of player movement since Ben C came on board last November. I do think he has a plan, and he is not going to make a trade or acquire a player just to make a splash. He has brought some front office people on board who have strong player development reputations in baseball. Sure the Bucs did not win at least 20 games in 2020, but in my opinion better days are coming under this current FO group.

Cool ... glad we are going to be on the cutting edge in something.

As some may recall, back in the early days of FC/NH there was a very definite plan for building a player development juggernaut that would compete at a top level every year. Unless I've missed it, I don't think that they've issued such a mission statement yet. That leads me to believe that what we're seeing is the unfolding of the plan for year two.
