The Giants' catcher, Ricardo Genoves, sounds like the best choice. If we have a DH, it almost becomes a no-brainer.

One problem he is a RH hitter. You know how Shelty likes to do the platoon thing. Still, it might be something they should look into. If he does not make the team he can be returned to the Giants.

The choices weren't so difficult after all, I guess.  :D

Does anyone know if teams can re-do their 40 man rosters to protect prospects ? I would think the Pirates would want to add mason martin to their 40 roster now that they know the draft will take place.

Thanks for posting this. Nothing very exciting though. We did better in the minor league Rule 5 last year.

In looking at their stats, my guess is that the interest with Matson and Laio is associated with their innings pitched to SO ratio last year. Perhaps (although unlikely) both have live arms that could translate to offering some help in the pen at some point.

Also, losing Jennings and Davis does not appear to have any real impact on the Pirates' minor league system.

So, the Pirates spend about $75,000, but get $50,000 of that back from the players that were drafted. Seeing as none of the players drafted need to be protected on the major league roster, this appears to be a minor move with little to no downside.
