Hayes grounds into a force play and Andujar pops out. Losing streak up to eight.

Sadly. Not much good to take from tonight except that Hayes had a pair of hits and Suwinski hit his 7th homer, so there’s that.

What a disappointment all around. Poor pitching, poor defense, poor offense.

Looking at some of the swings taken tonight, the losing streak is in their heads, and they feel the pressure of being at the top. Everyone went up there trying to hit 7 run HR's. When they tried to show some discipline, they were called out on strikes routinely.

The only hope presenting itself in the minors right now is Rodriguez. He can play first, so that could spell Santana instead of using Connor Joe. Watching Joe play first reminds me of all the other guys over the last few years playing there. They can't. And, we'd have a third catcher on the roster too.

We're stuck with Hedges much in the same way we were stuck with Yoshi last season. It boggles my mind how bad he is at the plate. I'm missing Michael Perez TBH. Same BA, but at least he'd hit one out every now and then.

Castro is clearly in a funk right now, and his defense is playing over to his offense. Add to that, some not very brilliant play either. When Marin came out in the 5th I believe and Oviedo still on the mound, the infield all came in like they do, but Castro was over by himself for a bit, you could tell brooding about the error still, and some missed chances that would have been tough plays. He finally noticed and got into the huddle.

But there isn't anyone else to bring up. Peguero is still in AA and not hitting there.

They need to figure out how to get him to get relaxed and get his confidence back. Mathias is not the answer.

Six in a row, and still haven't lost ground to anyone except Cincy. That's a positive.

Hill, Santana, Cutch.  Some questioned getting them, which I could see.  Didn't agree with them, but I could see the reasoning.

Hedges was the one who I questioned.  The guy can't hit.  Anytime they crow about a guy's glove, the baseball translation is, "he can't hit."  Guess what.  Hedges can't hit.

Yes, I would've kept Perez if Hedges was the best I could do.

As long as we're in first place, we can carry some dead weight.  It only matters when we're not.

Hedges has 6 singles and a double in 50 ABs (.140). For him, that's fairly normal. His BAs for the previous 4 years are .176, .145, .178 and .163.

Delay has 10 singles, 4 doubles, 1 triple and 1 HR in 43 ABs (.372). He seems like a good defensive catcher. He only hit .213 last year in 155 ABs but even .213 is better than .140. And if he could hit at least .240 he'd at least be in the ballpark with Bae, Cutch, Hayes, Marcano and Suwinski. I don't see the point in making Hedges the primary catcher.

With Hedges, the Pirates don't benefit from the DH because they still have 1 bat in the lineup similar to how pitchers batted. Given Hedges history, it's not as if they're waiting for him to snap out of it and start hitting. He cant!

Yeah, I realized this morning that the streak is only six. Math is hard.
