It is early, but Alford struck out both times today. I just don't think he puts the ball in play enough. Too many strikeouts from him.

There were some good signs in today’s game such as the home runs, a smart play by Cruz throwing out a runner trying to advance to third on a grounder to shortstop, as well as Burrows throwing two scoreless innings. It was unfortunate that Keller was struck by the line drive, and had to leave the game. He appeared to be a different pitcher than what I have seen in the past. It seemed like he was attacking the hitters. Also it appears to me that the lower half of his body( legs ) seem more solid. Hopefully he will not miss much time due to this injury.

Yea Alford stinks and while he can have some occasional pop it’s just not enough for me to justify keeping him as 4th or 5th outfielder. Their are much better options in the organization and I think it’s time to cut bait and move on from Alford once and for all.

Yea I really like Cruz a lot and I feel he needs to be on the big league roster starting somewhere whether it’s in the outfield or at shortstop. He looks really good and he is ready to be up here playing everyday. The Pirates don’t really have anybody currently on the roster that’s better to justify not having him on the Big League roster. I personally think it’s time also for the Pirates to move on and trade Kevin Newman. With guys like Cruz, Chavis, Castillo to name a few and also Gonzales and Puguero on their way up soon there is just no place for Newman to be here long term and I think it’s best of both parties move on from one another.

I think I heard that the draft lottery doesn't go into effect until next year.

If that's true, (again, not sure if it is) then, would it be in the club's best interest to wait before bringing him up to get the additional YOS?

Aside from more PT, would there be more of an incentive to have him on the OD roster than the YOS?

I also like Cruz a lot but he needs some more to work on his defense, especially if they want him to play multiple positions including the OF. He could play every day in Nashville rotating between SS and the OF to get the experience there. I'm not sold on Newman to begin hitting like a good everyday SS but I think he needs a chance. Give his month on the ML roster and if he is in a hitting funk you can trade him if there are any takers or just release him. His salary is not much and BOB should be able to eat the cost this season.
