Pirates played a good game, but 2 bad innings (4 runs each) were too much to overcome.  Sure would have been nice to see Bell's solid double off the wall in the 9th to end up as a HR in the bullpen.

The good thing is Bell is starting to come back and hit ... displaying some power that we expected earlier.

Yeah he is coming around. Hopefully it won't take so long next year. With his awful defense he needs to hit!

Yeah, basically a good game. Santana melted down but those things happen over the course of a season. Probably every pitcher on every team has a bad game from time to time. That's why it bothers me to give games away at any point in a season. The Bucs have lost 72 games. St.L. is in the 2nd WC spot and they've lost 8 fewer games. It's the difference between being 16 games over and 1 under .500 which realistically is [edit: IN]surmountable at this point. Then I think of the JV Sunday lineups, the benching of hot players for rest before or after days off, the infamous Holmes start, strange BP decisions by Hurdle, letting Polanco and Bell bat 2nd and 4th respectively for a large portion of the season while in the midst of terrible slumps. There are always going to be games when players let you down. They're human, not robots. Losses are inevitable even when trying your best to win. All teams experience that. I just wish TBMTIB would see that you can't realistically expect to compete if you're going to punt on some of the games. Because you're still going to lose many of the games you didn't punt on. It's the same every year when they look at their record in September and wish they hadn't lost some games they didn't put forth their best effort to win.
