Here are the top 10 excuses and alibis for not acquiring a player.

1. He is an aging veteran on the decline.

2. He is too injury prone.

3. Acquiring him would bring us no closer to a championship.

4. He would never sign to play in Pittsburgh.

5. He would be a clubhouse cancer.

6. Acquiring him would upset the team chemistry.

7. Signing him would lose financial flexibility for a 1 year player.

8.We already have players just as good as him.

9. We are not the Red Sox or Yankees and they would outbid us.

10.He would block this LMG or that LMG from development.

"Phillies Managing Partner John Middleton said in a statement. "While Matt made many significant contributions to the organization, we did not accomplish our goal of playing baseball in October. Consequently, we have mutually agreed to allow new leadership to head Baseball Operations."

I don't know about that. When Huntington was fired, Nutting issued this statement: "While Neal made many significant contributions to the organization, we did not accomplish our goal of making more money. Consequently, we have mutually agreed to allow new leadership to head Baseball operations." It's just a wee subtle difference.

Was any explanation given why Swaggerty wasn't given a look toward the end of the season. Are they considering Oliva the better prospect?

I think it's just that Oliva is further along at this point. He's been in the organization 4 years and has played a full season at AA.

Swaggerty has been in the organization 3 years and has not played above high A. 2020 would have been his AA season if they had played. IMO, Swaggerty is the better prospect but is a year behind Oliva in his development. It would have been tough to put Swaggerty up against MLB pitching when he had never even seen AA pitching.

We dont deal with suspects in the Off-season Thread. It's to give (other, obviously) teams credit for improving their rosters by signing and trading for legitimate, authentic, bona-fide MLB players; you know- things that real GMs do.

I saw Swaggerty at Morgantown his rookie season and was impressed by his defense but his hitting left a lot to be desired. He did not hit for a lot of power, his rbi's were nothing to talk about. Then in 2019, he was in Bradenton and while he did hit for a bit more power he was a strikeout machine. To me, he seems to be an Austin Meadows type who lost a year's development.
