I don't see Cherington doing that. I think he's painted himself into a corner where he's at the point where he has to sink or swim with what he's assembled. But Cherington might not last the season. And a new GM might opt for a total rebuild (yes, another one of those) and start selling off the parts for....you guessed it....prospects.

It's to their benefit that one of their opponents doesn't really try. That's not to say the players don't try. But the organization is run in such a way that no effort is made to be a team that is a worthy opponent.
Right. I've made that point in the past. Underwriting the Pirates in exchange for them not competing is just a cost of doing business for the big market teams. The downside is that it causes the league to lose credibility to those who are paying attention, but I don't think the owners care.
