Bucs just love giving away games. Two this series, two against the Giants not long ago.

All on the bullpen

I sincerely believed that, when BC was hired, this season would be the one when the team would finally become legitimately competitive. His drafts appeared to be solid, and have been better relative to the previous regime but, other than Jones, Skenes and Gonzales recently, there has been little to no impact by BC’s choices. The player development still looks like there’s a lot to be desired, when compared to other organizations that have young players already making an impact.

But after the first third of the year, it’s looking like we’re still less than mediocre. Young players like Cruz, Suwinski, Davis, and Triolo look overmatched and/or unprepared for this level of play. It’s inexcusable that power bats have either been undrafted or undeveloped by this time, especially guys who hit left handed.

Why? Have the Pirates been that bad at it, not just under BC, but going all the way back to the opening of PNC Park. It’s totally disheartening as a fan. We see sporadic glimpses, like during the past two Aprils, but those times soon devolve into play that exposes the players, and coaches, for what they are: less than average. The proof’s in the record.

I don't fault Shelton for pulling Priester when he did. Priester is Priester. He's not very good, he'd already given up 3 hits in the inning and a LH batter Vogelbach was coming up. But in true Sheltonian fashion, the RH Stratton was brought in to face Vogelbach. Maybe the LH Hernandez had been listening to Kevin Young and fell asleep. I don't know why he's on the team if he isn't used. In the Pirate BP only Holderman and Hernandez have ERAs under 4.61. They need better relievers and a manager who knows how to use them.
