Re: Classic Baseball Era Hall of Fame election
They keep changing the categories, so previous votes are of limited use. The last time they were on a ballot, in 2022, Harris drew 10 votes and Donaldson 8, but that was on a ballot of real old timers. I think Allen has come within one vote twice in the last decade. Tiant's recent death could have a...

Classic Baseball Era Hall of Fame election
I don't think this has been posted here. Dave Parker's on a ballot for December 8 election. There's eight players on the ballot, 16 voters. Eligible players had their biggest impact on baseball before 1980. They are: Negro Leaguers Vic Harris and John Donaldson, Dick Allen, Ken Boyer, Parker, Steve ...

Re: 2024 Off-Season Thread
I remember seeing Hague at Hickory back in 2008. Big guy, never got over 15 homers in a season in the minors. I thought he had more of a major league career than 84 at-bats.

Re: 2024 Off-Season Thread
Of course, this isn't news to any of us. The Pirates have had black holes at first and third bases, and in right field, since before moving into PNC Park. It's remarkable that little to no offense has come from those positions over the past 30 years of both drafting and signing guys internationally...

Re: The Departed
Charlie Morton plunked eighteen more batters this year, running his career total to 186. That ties him for seventh place all-time on the HBP list, with Tim Wakefield. It seems Morton is contemplating retirement, but if he does come back next year he could easily jump over Randy Johnson and Eddie Pla...

Re: Davey Jones Locker
Just remembered this about Fernando: Lee Tunnell came up to the Pirates in September, 1982. He drew his first start in Los Angeles against Fernando, who was 17-10. Fernando threw a complete game, one run, eleven strikeouts. Tunnell threw seven innings of shutout ball, and the Pirates won, 1-0.

Re: Davey Jones Locker
Rudy May, a fine pitcher, was part of a true rarity - a ten-player, mid-season deal between the Orioles and Yankees. Orioles got catcher Rick Dempsey, starters May and Scottie McGregor, relievers Tippy Martinez and Dave Pagan. The Yankees got catcher Elrod Hendricks, starters Ken Holtzman and Doyle ...

Re: Davey Jones Locker
Fernando Valenzuela, 63, RIP. He was a masterful pitcher for a while, and then a battler for a long time:

If you weren't around then, you can't understand how big he was.

Re: Davey Jones Locker
Tiant threw 57 innings for the Pirates when he was 40. "Luis Tiant was a legend when I was a kid." I had a dream about Tiant. I was a rookie, and he was throwing batting practice. I hit a few liners, and was feeling pretty good. The guys in the dugout were nodding their approval. Then Earl...
