Re: The Departed

Ott was a rarity - a minor league outfielder who just didn't hit enough and fully converted to catcher in one season at Triple A. I think the Pirates kept him in the outfield for several years because they liked his arm.

Re: The Departed

Larry Demery who pitched in the 70s for the Bucs has passed. The well-named "Bullfrog" He pitched only four seasons in the majors, never had a losing record. Demery joined the team in June, 1974, and made 15 starts, including a two-month run beginning in mid-July when he went 6-2 in the m...

Re: The Departed

Am I remembering correctly that he took no hitters deep into several games that year? He sure did. Pitching for the Cards against the Reds in 1989, DeLeon pitched eleven shutout innings while facing the minimum 33 batters, yielding only a single. DeLeon was called up to cover an injury or some such...

Re: 2024 Official Spring Training Thread

I'm sure everyone realizes this, but WAR isn't the full measure. Quintana started Game 1 in the Cards playoff series that year - that's pretty serious leverage that has to be considered in some way.

Re: Article on Pirates' developmental issues.

.I have read there was a trade Neal Huntington wanted to make at the Winter Meetings in 2011 or 2012 with pitcher the Indians had, but Coonley stopped it.

Re: The Departed

McBean went the distance while giving up 13 hits. That would never happen today. I wonder how many pitches he threw? Maybe not so many for that era, around 138. Someone came up with a formula to estimate pitches: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_pitch_count_estimator I'd love to have an accura...

Re: Baseball changes over the years

They use many more relievers now, but guys "warming up in the bullpen" has been drastically reduced. 50 years ago, it wasn't at all unusual for a pitcher to warm up two or three times, and not get into the game at all. Now it's nearly always warm up on schedule, and go right into the game.

Re: The Departed

Vic Davalillo passed away on December 6 at 84. He batted .290 for the Pirates, 1971-73. He was invaluable to the 1971 World Series winner and the 1972 division winner, subbing in the outfield and at first base, pinch hitting and providing some speed on a team that was trending toward slugging. He pl...
