Remembering The Great One

<t>I consider myself fortunate to have become a devoted baseball and Pirate fan when the Pirates won the series in 1960. Clemente was and remains my favorite Pirate player. I do, however wish that I didn't choose to follow his reasoning to use a heavy bat (I never could hit, but using a heavy bat li...

The Roster

<t>A couple of comments<br/> <br/> <br/> <br/> 1) When BC looked at the assembled bag of mediocrity on the pitching staff, he chose to give up Wilson to add Garcia. While Wilson may never make it in the majors, I would rather have kept him than to have signed Velasquez.<br/> <br/> <br/> <br/> 2) I s...

The Roster

With the signing of Hill and the acquisitions of Garcia, Velasquez (a head scratcher), Moria, and Hernandez (Rule 5), the Pirates now have 20 pitchers on the roster who pitched with the Pirates o another team last year. While I assume that Ortiz and Ramirez and maybe even DeLosSantos could start the...

Thoughts On the Pirates Off Season

<t>This off-season strikes me as one in which BC determined that the team is one year away from having the internal talent to (hopefully) compete. Thus, sign a slew of 1 year fungible stop-gaps that most won't remember 2 years or less from now, and pray that Endy, Davis, Gonzalez, Peguero, Priester,...

Sign Keller and Contreras Now!

<t>As we all know, Shelton has a bit of a quick hook, even though the bullpen's performance faded as the season wore on. I also note that Keller's innings/start post July was actually pretty decent when compared to other MLB starters. <br/> <br/> <br/> <br/> While I couldn't (quickly) put my hands o...

Sign Keller and Contreras Now!

<t>I agree that Keller has often been consistent, and will add that he often has been lousy. However, from July - October, he regularly took the mound (16 starts), and only yielded more than 3 runs in 3 games, and in one of those games, a number of the runs were unearned. <br/> <br/> <br/> <br/> Kel...

The Departed

I see where the Red Sox released Chan Ho Park today, and that the Giants were able to pass Yajure through waivers with no one claiming him.

With deference to Contreras, perhaps Yankee minor leaguers are not all that good.

Sign Keller and Contreras Now!

<t>I have supported most of BC's moves to try and rebuild the organization, recognizing that not every move will work out and pay dividends. I also have no real information regarding the financial parameters that Nutting has established in which BC can operate. Frankly, they could be so strict that ...

Sign Keller and Contreras Now!

The Nats just signed Trevor Williams to a 2 year $13 million contract. Frankly, I would be disappointed if the Pirates brought him back, even if it was for the amount paid out to Velasquez.

BC needs to be talking with both Keller and Contreras about a long term deal.

Upcoming Rule 5 Draft

<t>Actually, the Pirates had 11 players (almost half a roster/team of players) selected from their system in the minor league phase of the draft. Some were players like Jared Oliva and Peter Solomon who have seen time in the majors, but most were folks who I am not familiar with, and who were not am...
