Please Don’t Wake Me Up – I’m Enjoying this Dream

By Richard A. Mathews

Please don’t wake me up, I’m enjoying this dream.

A Pittsburgh Pirate team whose starting pitchers are leaving the game in the sixth, seventh, eighth or even ninth inning handing the baseball off with a lead.

A Pittsburgh Pirate team whose relief pitchers are giving the club a chance to come back and holding off late games rallies.

A Pittsburgh Pirate team whose closer is 10 for 10 in save attempts.

Please don’t wake me up, I’m enjoying this dream.

In my fantasy, I’m watching normally solid defense played, even if on occasion it comes from players whose technical skills don’t yet match their tremendous athletic ability.

In staring transfixed at aggressive base running generating runs which for over a decade never scored.

Please don’t wake me up, I’m enjoying this dream.

Oh, how this delusion makes me smile bringing back memories of my youth.

In my ongoing dream, the Bucs lineup is deep enough that a crooked number can appear out of nowhere.

Platoons actually are producing in combination All Star type production.

Power hitters are asked to bunt for the good of the team resulting in game winning runs.

Players cast aside are hitting Grand Slams and 3-run homers from their weaker side of the plate.

Please don’t wake me up, I’m enjoying this dream.

While my dream will unlikely be cut short, I will enjoy every moment while I can.

As an admitted fan of “Old School Fundamental Baseball,” yes, I still cringe at the mistakes of commission and omission this 2011 Pirate team commits.

That fact admitted, I hope every Pirate fan is enjoying the season to date as much as I am.

Perhaps, Bob Walk was not crazy contending, “Charlie Morton can be a true Ace.”

Perhaps, John Wehner knows more about a hitter’s potential than we gave him credit for when he stated, “Neil Walker will be a career .300 in the show.”

Perhaps, even this humble Pirate fan might be right for once, “The 2011 Bucs could repeat if not exceed the improbably run of the 1997 Freak Show team.”

The season is young and for too many years we have watched early thrills turn into late season disappointment.

But for now all I ask is, “Please don’t wake me up, I’m enjoying this dream too much.”
