1960 Revisited - October 8 |
By Bobster
Saturday, October 8, 1960---On the heels of their 16-3 shellacking of the Pirates, the Yankees won a 10-0 game in Yankee Stadium before 70,001 fans. The issue was settled quickly. Whitey Ford set down the Pirates in the first inning, getting Virdon to bounce back to Ford, Groat to ground to Richardson at 2B, and striking out Clemente.
When the Yankees came to bat in the bottom of the first, Bob Cerv led off against Vinegar Bend Mizell. When the 1960 season began, Cerv was the left fielder for the Kansas City Athletics and Mizell was the second man in the starting rotation for the St. Louis Cardinals. Both had been fortunate to be traded to pennant contenders. The bottom of the first quickly became a nightmare for the Pirates. Cerv led off with a single and Maris flied out to Clemente. But Mantle and Skowron singled to take a 1-0 lead. Mizell then walked McDougald to load the bases. That was all for Mizell as Clem Labine replaced him. Elston Howard singled home Mantle to make it 2-0. That brought up Bobby Richardson with the bases loaded. Richardson was the only batter in the Yankee lineup not know for his hitting. He batted .252 during the season with 1 HR and 26 RBIs. But Richardson sent a Labine pitch over the LF wall for a grand slam to make it 6-0. Labine then sandwiched singles to Kubek and Cerv around a fielder’s choice by Ford. Finally, Fred Green came on and retired Maris on a pop-up to catcher Hal Smith to end the first inning with NY ahead 6-0.
In the second inning, Stuart struck out and Cimoli and Smith flied to Cerv in LF. Green gave up a single to Mantle who advanced on a wild pitch. But Mantle was out trying to steal third, and both Skowron and McDougald struck out.
Another 3 up-3 down inning for the Pirates in the third. Hoak flied to Mantle in CF. Mazeroski bounced back to Ford. Green lined to Kubek at SS. It was another strong inning for Fred Green as well, as he got Howard to fly to Cimoli in LF, struck out Richardson and got Kubek to ground to Hoak at 3B.
The Bucs finally got a baserunner in the fourth when Virdon led off with a single. But Groat bounced back to Ford, Clemente bounced to McDougald at 3B and Stuart flied to Maris in RF. The Pirates had used 6 pitchers in the 16-3 loss 2 days earlier. Green, who had shut down NY since entering in the first inning continued in the bottom of the fourth. It was one inning too long. He gave up a lead-off single to Ford but got Cerv to bounce to Hoak and Maris to ground to Mazeroski. Then the wheels fell off the cart. Mantle hit a long HR to make it 8-0. Skowron and McDougald singled. That brought George Witt out of the bullpen. Witt gave up a single to Howard to load the bases. Richardson singled to score 2 and make it 10-0. Witt threw a wild pitch to move the runners to second and third and walked Kubek. But he ended the inning by getting Ford to ground to Mazeroski.
In the fifth, Cimoli grounded to Richardson at 2B, Smith grounded to Kubek at SS and Hoak flied to Cerv in LF. Witt struck out Cerv and walked Maris. Mantle doubled Maris to third. Skowron bounced to Mazeroski who threw home to get Maris for the second out. McDougald grounded to Hoak at third.
In the sixth, the Bucs got their second runner of the game when Mazeroski led off with a single. Gene Baker batted for Witt and grounded out, first base to pitcher covering. Virdon grounded to second and Groat grounded to third. Tom Cheney took the mound for Pittsburgh. Cheney struck out Howard, got Richardson to fly to Virdon in CF and Kubek to fly to Cimoli in LF.
Clemente opened the seventh with a fly out to Maris in RF. Stuart singled and Cimoli walked. It was the first time the Bucs had 2 runners on at the same time. But Smith promptly bounced back to Ford who initiated a pitcher to second to first DP. Cheney struck out Ford and got Cerv to fly to Virdon. Berra, replacing Maris in RF, singled, but Cheney struck out Mantle to end the inning.
Another 3 up/3 down inning for the Pirates in the eighth. Hoak grounded to McDougald at 3B. Mazeroski flied to Mantle in CF. Dick Schofield batted for Cheney and lined to Kubek at SS. Joe Gibbon took over for Cheney. Skowron grounded to Groat, McDougald flied to Virdon, Howard walked and Richardson popped to Mazeroski.
In the ninth, Virdon and Groat both bounced out, Skowron to Ford covering. Clemente singled and Stuart reached on an error by Kubek. But Cimoli struck out to end the game with NY winning 10-0.
Ford (1-0) pitched a 4-hit shutout. The Yankees had 16 hits, giving them a total of 35 hits in the last 2 games. Mantle had 4 hits. Cerv, Skowron, Howard and Richardson each had 2 hits. Mantle and Richardson had HRs.
Mizell had lasted one-third inning. Labine had done the same. But the rest of the bullpen pitched well. Green gave up 4 runs but only after he had began his fourth inning of work. Prior to that, Green had faced the minimum 7 batters in his 2 1/3 innings of work. And he retired 2 of the first 3 batters in the fourth. Witt had been hit hard when he entered in the fourth, allowing both inherited runners to score. But he settled down and got through that inning and the fifth. Cheney looked very strong in his 2 innings, allowing only one baserunner and striking out 3. And Gibbon pitched a scoreless eighth. But all that work from the bullpen had been wasted in a 10-0 rout. Murtaugh had used 6 pitchers in both games 2 and 3. Except for Face, who had not appeared in the 2 lopsided losses, every member of the Pirate bullpen had appeared in each of the last 2 games. Vern Law, pitching on a sprained ankle and 3 days rest, would come back to start game 4 against the Yankees’ Ralph Terry.
