1960 Revisited - October 11
By Bobster

Tuesday, October 11, 1960---The teams were off as they headed back to Pittsburgh where Bob Friend (0-1) would take on Whitey Ford (1-0). The Pirates, surprisingly up 3 games to 2 after taking 2 of 3 in Yankee Stadium, now needed only to split the 2 remaining games in Pittsburgh to win it all. Bill Mazeroski (6 for 18) led the Pirates at .333 and had their only HR (in game 1) so far. Tony Kubek (9 for 22) led NY at .409. The Yankees had received HRs from Mantle (3), Maris (2), Howard, Richardson and Skowron.

Friend had started game 2, won by NY 16-3. Ford had started game 3 and shut out the Pirates 10-0.

The Pirates’ good showing so far was a result of the unflappable performances of their reliable veterans. Despite the pressures and their lack of World Series experience, what could easily have been demoralizing, one-sided losses in games 2 and 3, and the loss of Bob Skinner since game 1, the Pirates were getting strong pitching from Law, Haddix and Face, steady play from Mazeroski, Clemente and Groat, and outstanding defense from Virdon and Hoak. The Yankees had trounced the Pirates 16-3 and 10-0 in games 2 and 3, but they couldn’t shake the Bucs. The Yankees must have felt like Butch and Sundance watching their relentless posse, "Who are those guys?"
