1960 Revisited - October 10
By Bobster

Monday, October 10, 1960---Tied 2 games apiece, Harvey Haddix went for the Pirates against Art Ditmar of NY. Haddix had not yet appeared in the series. Ditmar started and lost game 1, lasting less than one inning.

Ditmar had a much better first inning this time, getting Virdon to pop to catcher Elston Howard, Groat to fly to Cerv in LF and Clemente to bounce to Kubek at SS. Haddix got McDougald to ground to Hoak at 3B and Maris to ground to Maz at 2B. But Cerv got an infield hit and took second on an errant throw by Hoak. Mantle walked and Skowron whiffed.

Ditmar’s problems began in the second. Stuart singled and was forced at 2B by Cimoli. But Burgess doubled, sending Cimoli to 3B. Hoak hit a grounder to SS and Kubek threw to 3B trying to get Burgess. But the throw got away from McDougald for an error as Cimoli scored, Burgess was safe at 3B, and Hoak took 2B. Mazeroski then doubled over third baseman McDougald to score both Burgess and Hoak for a 3-0 lead. It was another short outing for Ditmar as Luis Arroyo, an ex-Pirate, came out of the bullpen. Arroyo struck out Haddix, and Virdon fouled out to McDougald leaning over the rail into the crowd. The Yankees struck back when Howard opened the bottom of the second with a double. He went to third on a bouncer to Mazeroski with Haddix taking the throw at first. Howard then scored on a Kubek grounder to Stuart at 1B before Arroyo ended the inning with a grounder to Groat. The Bucs led 3-1.

Both teams scored a run in the third. Groat led off with a double over McDougald and scored on Clemente’s single. Bill Stafford replaced Arroyo. Then Stuart popped to McDougald at 3B, Cimoli flied to Maris in RF and Burgess grounded to Richardson at 2B. McDougald led off for NY with a comebacker to Haddix. But Maris homered to make it 4-2 Pirates. Cerv grounded to Maz, Mantle walked and Skowron flied to Clemente.

Stafford and Haddix then began to dominate. Hoak opened the fourth with a single but Mazeroski grounded to McDougald who got the force on Hoak at 2B. Then Haddix hit into a Stafford-to-Kubek-to Skowron DP. Howard led off for NY by reaching on a error by Groat. But Richardson hit it to Maz for a DP. Kubek reached when strike three got away from Burgess for a passed ball. But Stafford struck out to end the inning.

In the fifth, Virdon grounded to Richardson, and Groat and Clemente grounded to Kubek. The Yankees fared no better against Haddix. McDougald flied to Clemente, Maris popped to Groat and Cerv struck out.

More of the same in the sixth. Stuart bounced to McDougald at 3B. Cimoli struck out and Burgess flied to Mantle in CF. Then Mantle struck out, Skowron bounced to Groat at SS and Howard struck out. Still 4-2 Pirates after six.

Hoak started the seventh by striking out, Maz flew out to Cerv in LF and Haddix singled. Virdon’s double sent Haddix to third but Groat flied to Cerv in LF. Richardson lined to Hoak at 3B and Kubek singled. Hector Lopez batted for Stafford and singled, sending Kubek to second. That brought Face out of the bullpen. Face got McDougald to ground to Groat who forced Lopez at 2B. Then Face whiffed Maris to end the inning. Still 4-2 Bucs.

Ryne Duren took over on the mound for NY. Duren was known as a flame thrower with coke-bottle glasses and a tendency to be wild with his pitches. He struck out Clemente, got Stuart to fly to Cerv in LF and struck out Cimoli. Rocky Nelson replaced Stuart at 1B for defense in the bottom of the eighth. Face got Cerv to fly to Virdon but Mantle walked. Skowron then popped to Groat, and Berra, pinch-hitting for Howard, bounced to Maz. Berra remained in the game behind the plate.

Burgess began the ninth with a single to LF, and the rotund catcher took 2B when Cerv bobbled the ball for an error. Joe Christopher ran for Burgess. Duren’s first pitch to Hoak almost hit him, and Berra couldn’t hold it. The speedy Christopher took off for third when Berra dropped the ball and slid in safely ahead of Berra’a throw. A wild pitch was charged to Duren. Hoak’s single then scored Christopher to make it 5-2 Pirates. Then Maz and Face struck out to end the inning. With Burgess having been removed for the pinch runner, Bob Oldis went in to catch for the Bucs in the bottom of the ninth. Richardson grounded to Groat, Kubek popped to Groat and Blanchard, batting for Duren, flied to Clemente to end the game.

Haddix (1-0) was the winner. He and Face held NY to 5 hits. Ditmar (0-2) lost. Burgess and Hoak each had 2 hits. Mazeroski’s 2-run double was the pivotal hit in the Bucs’ 3-run second inning. Maz was having a heck of a series so far, hitting safely in each of the first 5 games and going 6 for 18 in those games overall (with 4 RBIs). The Pirates had taken a surprising 3-2 lead in the series as they prepared to travel back to Pittsburgh.
