1960 Revisited - September 29
By Bobster

Thursday, September 29, 1960---The Pirates had their second straight day off as they prepared to end the regular season with a 3 game series against the Braves at Forbes Field. Law, Friend and Mizell would work for the Pirates as they tuned up for the World Series. For Law, the game against the Braves would be a chance to test his injured ankle. Meanwhile in Los Angeles, the Dodgers' Norm Larker went 1 for 4 against the Cardinals to drop to .324, just .001 behind Groat for the N.L. batting title.

Although Danny Murtaugh had utilized three platoons through much of the season, only one remained intact as the season neared its end. The Virdon/Cimoli platoon had ended in early August with Virdon taking over centerfield full time. The Stuart/Nelson platoon had ended in late August when Stuart began a hot streak. The Burgess/Smith platoon remained intact throughout the season and had worked well. Both catchers were productive hitters. Burgess, who batted left, started 83 games against right-handers and only 3 against left-handers. Smith, who batted right, started 44 games against left-handers and 22 against right-handers. His starts against righthanders were usually part of doubleheaders when both opposing pitchers were right-handed, or when Burgess missed a few games with an injury or needed a rest.
